Axel Luke Mitchell

As he has just turned 5, it's probably about time I put Axel's birth story on my  blog.  So here it is:

If you go by my dates, my due date was 12th March 2011, if you go by scans, my due date was 18th March 2011… so I figured, I must have been due somewhere in between… so imagine my disappointment when March 18th came and went, and I was still pregnant.

Wednesday 23rd March I had to head up to Auckland hospital for CTG monitoring and to clarify which date the doctors were going to work on for induction – I was, at this stage pretty scared they would go by the 12th as that made me 11 days overdue all ready, so I may have been admitted for induction immediately totally destroying all hopes of a natural, drug free, water birth at Birth Care.

The CTG showed that I was having regular tightenings, but I had yet to feel a thing… It also showed that all was well with bubs… So off for a scan with the doctor, who was very happy with everything, and was happy to let me go another 7 days before induction… YAY a reprieve… albeit a small one… I still had to get this baby out by 7.30pm Wednesday 30th March 2011.

Friday 25th March, and my midwife met me and my mum at Birth Care so she could monitor me and bubs with a CTG and do a Stretch ‘n’ Sweep {which by the way I had already had 4 previous ones starting at 38 weeks with no success yet}… While on the CTG monitor, I started to have tightenings that I could feel… they were coming every 3-7 minutes, so not regular, but definitely doing something. Midwife gave me a stretch ‘n’ sweep, I was already 4cm dilated, but cervix was still 2cm thick and a little posterior… baby had also turned posterior which I wasn’t too happy about having delivered one posterior and one anterior baby before, I knew which I preferred and posterior was NOT it. Midwife however was very confident that today would be the day my baby was born.

Mum and I headed off for a spot of shopping to keep me active, and to hopefully encourage baby to turn. Tightenings turned into full contractions, but never regulated… still swinging between 3 and 7mins apart and only lasting 30-45sec. By 8pm I contacted my midwife and told her I wanted to see her to see if any progress had been made as I was starting to tire out… so off to Birth Care traipsed me, Ian, my mum and my sister… the contractions by this stage were 3-5mins apart, but still only lasting 45-50sec… however, this being baby number 3, I was taking no chances.

Midwife examined me and declared there had been no change since that morning… she gave me some options, but the only one that didn’t involve heading to the hospital and having medical intervention, was to head home and wait and see… So that’s what I did… Got home, went to bed… woke at 3am, and timed contractions till 5am then they stopped, so I went back to sleep. My in laws were up from Ngatea so they helped with the other kids, while I rested and did nothing at all for the whole day on Saturday. I continued to get contractions throughout the day, but again they still didn’t regulate. Midwife came over to check me out, and again gave me the option of heading up to the hospital, but I was determined to avoid that at all costs.

Sunday morning I awoke feeling like crap… I’d slept all night, which meant I was NOT in labour STILL *sigh* Got up, and while making Cam's bed, had one almighty painful contraction which stopped me in my tracks. Half an hour later I still had nothing else, so txt midwife saying “nothing over night, labour not happening, giving up for today, I have plans”

Got undressed to jump in the shower and realised I had lost my entire plug… Jumped into shower, had 2 contractions in quick succession, hopped out and half an hour later there was still nothing else. Midwife called me and asked me to again meet her at Birth Care for CTG monitoring, as she was getting worried about my long latent phase. I told her I couldn’t meet her till 9.45am as I had to get Paris to hockey trials in Avondale first.

Headed off to Avondale and on arrival at the turf, I had another really strong contraction. Registered Paris, told her I was off for monitoring and I would arrange for someone to pick her up at 12. Back into the car and me and Ian were on our to Birth Care.

On the way, I had some pretty strong contractions, so decided to take note of time and length. Arrived at birth care and contractions were coming every 4-6minutes lasting 50sec. Midwife arrived late at 10 and during the wait for her to arrive I had started to pace the foyer. I told Ian that I thought I was in labour for real, but was too scared to get my hopes up.

Midwife put the CTG on and contractions became more intense. She gave me an internal examination and declared me to be 5cm dialated with cervix in the right place, and no thickness. She said she was happy to break my waters if I wanted her to, which I did… Off she went to set up a labour room and to start running the water for the pool. We called my mum and sister informed them of what was happening and told them to take their time, as contractions were still irregular and midwife was thinking baby wouldn’t be here till dinner time.

In the 10 minutes it took for my midwife to get the delivery room ready and me moved into it, and for Ian to head to the car and back with my labour bag, my contractions had stepped up to 3mins apart last 1min 30sec… wahoo… suddenly I was in active labour… midwife at this stage decided to not break my waters and to let me go for it my way.

Ian called my mum and sister and told them things had hotted up a bit and by the time they arrived at 11.30 my contractions were damn near on top of each other…

I hopped into the birth pool at 12.30 as leaning on the bed with Ian applying pressure to my back was no longer working for me… the water slowed my contractions down for about 20mins which gave me immense relief. By 1pm the contractions were completely on top of each other but I still had no urge to push… I was in the pool, leaning on the edge, holding onto both my sister and Ian’s hand squeezing the living daylights out of them, declaring in a very quiet but very stern voice that I was NEVER going to do this again.

1.20pm and I felt the urge to push, so midwife said to go for it… I pushed once, it didn’t feel right, I asked her to check progress, which she did and said I was 8cm… I felt a bit ripped off but then, 2 mins later, I really HAD to push… at 1.30pm my waters broke, 1.32pm I delivered a head, cord was removed from around his neck {I found this out later}… I tried to push shoulders out, but nothing was happening… midwife told me to push with my life so I did, at the same time she pulled the plug out of the pool, and pulled baby out with all her might as it was an extremely tight fit, and baby was stuck.

1.35pm baby was pulled/pushed out of me and brought up out of the water to be placed on my chest… I felt amazing… baby was very purple and took a couple of seconds {felt like hours} to make a sound… 1.37pm I checked to see what flavour we had and exclaimed to a very excited room that it was a boy…

Sunday with my boys

with hubby now working on Sundays, it was fast becoming the day of the week that I dreaded... it was an awful feeling, and I felt terrible for feeling it, but I couldn't help myself... we have no money for me to do things with the small boys... the teens are off doing their own thing each weekend, so I was left at home alone, with two boys who wanted to do things...

Last week, I decided that Sundays were no longer going to be a day a dread, but instead, a day of time spent doing things with Cammy and Axel...

So today, we baked... LOTS

We have artisan bread sitting on the bench rising as I type, we have made weetbix slice and cinnamon scrolls... the boys love baking and so do I, so it seemed like a perfect thing to do together...

Our bread before we covered it and set it aside to rise for a few hours

making the weetbix slice

Cinnamon Scrolls ready to go in the oven

Weetbix sliced all iced before going in the fridge to cool

Cinnamon Scrolls all iced waiting to be eaten

They were a hit!! the boys both informed me they were YUMMY!!

I'm Sorry...

I've been so super duper slack with my blogging lately... although in my defence, the last couple of months have been very hectic for me...

So we moved house 4 weeks ago... into our first home... so exciting... we have spent a fair bit of the last 4 weeks setting up rooms, then re-arranging the rooms, then re-arranging them again... and on and on and on and on... but it's fun, and pretty much everything is now as we want it to remain :)

We are now saving up to do up our kitchen a bit, something we are both very much looking forward to doing...

Cam is a changed kid since the move... in the old house, his nightly routine was to climb into our bed and watch a DVD till he fell asleep... but in the new house, he hasn't even watched a single DVD... at all!! his new bedtime routine is to play a game of memory on the tablet, then climb into his top bunk, and go to sleep... we don't have to sit with him or anything... it's brilliant...

Axel is sleeping alot better also... see the boys are now in seperate bedrooms, it's making such a difference during the night... we love it!

Paris and Josh are tired... as we are commuting them all the way back to Mt Roskill {we live in Papakura} for school... but it's only till the end of the year, as we thought it would be better for them to remain in their school this year and finish year 8 then start fresh at a new school next year.

All in all - things are coming along nicely.

changing it up...

So today we went to the Martha's Backyard store in Mt Wellington. I found this awesome product and just learningHAD to buy it...
Basically it is a bath bomb the size of a small fizzy lolly that changes the colour of the bath First colour in was blue
Then we added a yellow one (the picture doesn't show it as good)
Which made green
The boys had more fun in the bath tonight than they EVER have... and all for $3.50

Babywearing 2

We went up to the caravan for the weekend, and didn't take the pushchair... instead we only took the bubzilla... we thought this would be better for the pinecone hunt and bunny tails hunt we were planning on doing over the weekend...

Our pinecone hunt was very successful, finding a grand total of 28 pinecones for the fire :)

The bunny tails hunt - not so successful, turns out June is not the right time of year for bunny tails... will have to see when these are able to be found, as I need want them for the wedding...

BUT both hunts were successful in the use of the bubzilla, Axel LOVED it when I had him on my hip... and eventually grew to like being on my back also... me - I loved carrying him this way, and was very comfortable... All in all... a big thumbs up to the bubzilla

Baby Wearing...

I'm not sure if I've mentioned on here of not, but I'm a fan of baby wearing... I love holding my baby's close to my heart...

12yrs ago, I didn't know about Baby Wearing as such other than front packs, so thats what I had... Paris was in a front pack from day, then a back pack from about 9mths... We still utilised the front back till she was around 15mths...

With Cam, I knew I wanted a sling of some sort... I had a front pack, and loved it, but wanted something else also... when he was 6mths old, I went to the parent and child show, and trialled a couple of slings... he hated every single one of them... screamed the pavilion down... this left me feeling down-heartened... back to only the front pack it was for him...

With Axel... I was more pro-active... I bought a wrap before he was even born, and wore popped him in at least once a day from the day we came home from birthcare...

The wrap made my life so easy.... I kept it in my bag all the time, and used it sooooo much...

But now Axel is 14mths old, and not so into being held so close to me all the time, he prefers to face outwards, but that is no good if he falls asleep... AND because a wrap is stretchy I no longer feel comfortable using it, as he is too heavy and moves around so much, that it stretches while he is in, and I end up not being hands free at all, as I am sort of holding him into place...

So, I started looking on a trade me for a sling, so I could, if nothing else, carry Axel on my hip AND be hands free... I had a budget though, as we are saving all our penny's for the wedding... not much you can get even second hand for $20 or less though...

And then... by some sheer miracle... The Sleep Store had a sale... and these totally awesome Bubzilla Slings were reduced to clear... from $99 to $15!!! WAHOO!! I snapped one up immediately... It arrived yesterday, and me and Axel have already played around with it... he likes it, I like it... I'm happy

Obviously these are not pics of me lol... I just stole these off the internet to show you examples of how the sling can be worn/used

Who does it in your house... in our house, Ian gets up to the kids every-time... but when it comes to Axel... this picture describes the situation perfectly...

Planning for Axel's 1st birthday party is in full swing at the moment... ideas here, purchases there, I love it!

ahhhh the memories

A year ago today I wrote this post...

See it was my Due Date, and having gone 5 days over with Cam, I really wasn't keen on going to far over again... Axel, however had other plans.

So while today may very be my 1yr EDD anniversary { :) } it's still another 15 days before Axel turns 1

Party planning is in full swing, and I can't wait

Kids love cake

The other morning, Cam wanted a piece of cake... After eating all the icing, he then left the cake... and Axel found it... I walked into the lounge to see this:

I took the photo after he had shoved a whole piece of cake bigger than his fist into his mouth :)

Changing Rooms

Or more, it's time to merge children into one room...

Thats right, we have reclaimed our bedroom and moved Axel into Cammy's room... Now Cammy's room for starters isn't a big space, so alot of thought has had to go into this...

Here are the before pics {after pics will be up in the next few days}

Sleep Training

While we were at the the Caravan Axel's sleeping {or not sleeping} got worse and worse... in fact there were a few nights where he was waking at 2am and not going back to sleep till 4am...

One of my lovely caravan neighbours also has 4 kids, and she offered to help me "sleep train" the little bugger, and I accepted the offer...

I'm not a fan of the CIO* method, so opted for a blend of that and the Controlled Crying method... {I decided that I would go into him every 7 minutes to replace his dummy}

The first night we put him to bed awake, and left him to cry.. it took only 34 mins for him to go to sleep, and then he slept through WTF!! I couldn't believe it... Of course he hasn't slept through every night, but I certainly have stopped going to him during the night... his last feed is at bedtime, and I don't feed him again till 5am {his usual waking time}

Most nights he is sleeping through till about 4am, then grizzling for a bit, going back to sleep, waking at 5am, feeding, going back to bed, then waking for the day around 7.30am...

And me - I am feeling AMAZING

I only wish I had started the Sleep Training earlier {and that I had done it with Cammy}

an update on the kidneys...

remember this post, where I first actually mentioned anything at all about Axel having issues with his kidneys?

Well a few weeks ago, we had an ultrasound and a specialists appointment and were discharged from the Renal Pead's has the dialation has completely gone...

You cannot imagine how relieved I was/am... Of course we can't become complaicent or anything about this... if he has any urine infections in the next 12-18mths, we have to be sent immediately to have an ultrasound to make sure the dialation hasn't returned...

But for now, at least, we smile, and we celebrate
